Rolled roofing, also known as roll roofing or rolled composition roofing, is a type of roofing material that comes in long rolls of asphalt-impregnated felt. Unlike shingles, which are installed one by one, rolled roofing material is applied in large strips that cover the entire roof surface. It’s a practical, affordable solution for flat roofs and low-slope applications where traditional shingles aren’t suitable.

At Aegis Construction, we supply high-quality rolled roof materials and provide expert installation services for homeowners and businesses across Chicago and the surrounding area. Whether you need a new rolled roof or a repair, we have the expertise and equipment to handle any project, big or small. Contact us today at (773) 812-3447 for a free estimate.

    Types of Rolled Roofing

We install a variety of rolled roofing types for Chicago-area properties. Each option comes with its own features, benefits, and best-use applications. Here’s a breakdown of the most common types:

    Mineral-Surfaced Rolled Roofing

One of the most popular low-slope roofing materials available, mineral-surfaced rolled roofing is known for its durability and weather resistance. It features a layer of mineral granules on the surface that protects against weather, fire, and UV rays. It comes in a variety of colors and styles, making it a versatile choice for both residential and commercial roofs in Chicago. It is heavier and slightly more expensive than other rolled roofing options, but it offers the best long-term protection.

    Smooth-Surfaced Rolled Roofing

Smooth-surfaced rolled roofing has a clean, shiny surface without granules. It’s lighter and more affordable than mineral-surfaced options, making it a cost-effective choice for temporary applications or as underlayment for metal roofs. It offers less weather protection and aesthetic appeal than mineral-surfaced roofing, so it’s best suited for low-visibility areas or short-term solutions.

    Saturated Felt Rolled Roofing

Saturated felt rolled roofing is made from organic or synthetic felt that has been saturated with asphalt. It’s one of the most affordable rolled roofing options and is commonly used as a temporary roofing solution or as an underlayment beneath other roofing materials. While it won’t hold up as a permanent solution, it’s a reliable option when time or budget is a primary concern.

    How Rolled Roofing Is Installed

Installing rolled roofing requires precision and care to ensure a watertight, long-lasting result. While the process is more straightforward than a full shingle installation, it still requires proper technique. Here’s an overview of how our team approaches rolled roofing installation:

Step 1: Prepare the Roof Before any material goes down, the roof surface must be clean, dry, and free of debris, old nails, or holes. We assess the substrate and make any necessary repairs before installation begins. We also monitor weather conditions closely — rolled roofing should never be installed in rain, high wind, or extreme heat.

Step 2: Cut the Roofing Material We measure and cut the rolled roofing into manageable sections sized to fit your roof dimensions. Pieces are typically cut between 18 and 36 inches in length depending on the material type, with the first piece cut slightly longer to allow for proper overhang at the roof edge.

Step 3: Install the First Piece The first section is aligned with the bottom edge of the roof and fastened along the top edge using roofing nails spaced approximately 4 inches apart. Roofing cement is applied along the bottom edge to create a sealed bond with the roof deck. The section is smoothed flat to eliminate any wrinkles or air pockets.

Step 4: Install Remaining Pieces Each subsequent section overlaps the previous one by approximately 2 inches. Seams are staggered to prevent weak points on the roof surface. Roofing cement is applied along all bottom edges and overlapping seams, and each section is nailed down along the top edge. This process continues until the full roof surface is covered.

Step 5: Install the Ridge Cap The final step is installing the ridge cap — a strip of rolled roofing approximately 18 inches wide that covers the peak of the roof. It’s folded in half, placed over the ridge to overlap both sides, nailed along both edges, and sealed with roofing cement along all seams and nail heads.

Professional installation is strongly recommended for all but the simplest applications. Improper installation is the leading cause of premature rolled roof failure, especially in the Chicago climate, where freeze-thaw cycles put significant stress on roofing materials.
