Rolled roofing, also known as roll roofing or rolled composition roofing, is a type of roofing material that comes in long rolls of asphalt-impregnated felt. Unlike shingles, which are installed one by one, rolled roofing material is applied in large strips that cover the entire roof surface. It’s a practical, affordable solution for flat roofs and low-slope applications where traditional shingles aren’t suitable.
At Aegis Construction, we supply high-quality rolled roof materials and provide expert installation services for homeowners and businesses across Chicago and the surrounding area. Whether you need a new rolled roof or a repair, we have the expertise and equipment to handle any project, big or small. Contact us today at (773) 812-3447 for a free estimate.
Types of Rolled Roofing
We install a variety of rolled roofing types for Chicago-area properties. Each option comes with its own features, benefits, and best-use applications. Here’s a breakdown of the most common types:
Mineral-Surfaced Rolled Roofing
One of the most popular low-slope roofing materials available, mineral-surfaced rolled roofing is known for its durability and weather resistance. It features a layer of mineral granules on the surface that protects against weather, fire, and UV rays. It comes in a variety of colors and styles, making it a versatile choice for both residential and commercial roofs in Chicago. It is heavier and slightly more expensive than other rolled roofing options, but it offers the best long-term protection.
Smooth-Surfaced Rolled Roofing
Smooth-surfaced rolled roofing has a clean, shiny surface without granules. It’s lighter and more affordable than mineral-surfaced options, making it a cost-effective choice for temporary applications or as underlayment for metal roofs. It offers less weather protection and aesthetic appeal than mineral-surfaced roofing, so it’s best suited for low-visibility areas or short-term solutions.
Saturated Felt Rolled Roofing
Saturated felt rolled roofing is made from organic or synthetic felt that has been saturated with asphalt. It’s one of the most affordable rolled roofing options and is commonly used as a temporary roofing solution or as an underlayment beneath other roofing materials. While it won’t hold up as a permanent solution, it’s a reliable option when time or budget is a primary concern.
Not sure which type is right for your Chicago property? Our team can walk you through your options and recommend the best material for your roof’s slope, usage, and budget.

How Rolled Roofing Is Installed
Installing rolled roofing requires precision and care to ensure a watertight, long-lasting result. While the process is more straightforward than a full shingle installation, it still requires proper technique. Here’s an overview of how our team approaches rolled roofing installation:
Step 1: Prepare the Roof Before any material goes down, the roof surface must be clean, dry, and free of debris, old nails, or holes. We assess the substrate and make any necessary repairs before installation begins. We also monitor weather conditions closely — rolled roofing should never be installed in rain, high wind, or extreme heat.
Step 2: Cut the Roofing Material We measure and cut the rolled roofing into manageable sections sized to fit your roof dimensions. Pieces are typically cut between 18 and 36 inches in length depending on the material type, with the first piece cut slightly longer to allow for proper overhang at the roof edge.
Step 3: Install the First Piece The first section is aligned with the bottom edge of the roof and fastened along the top edge using roofing nails spaced approximately 4 inches apart. Roofing cement is applied along the bottom edge to create a sealed bond with the roof deck. The section is smoothed flat to eliminate any wrinkles or air pockets.
Step 4: Install Remaining Pieces Each subsequent section overlaps the previous one by approximately 2 inches. Seams are staggered to prevent weak points on the roof surface. Roofing cement is applied along all bottom edges and overlapping seams, and each section is nailed down along the top edge. This process continues until the full roof surface is covered.
Step 5: Install the Ridge Cap The final step is installing the ridge cap — a strip of rolled roofing approximately 18 inches wide that covers the peak of the roof. It’s folded in half, placed over the ridge to overlap both sides, nailed along both edges, and sealed with roofing cement along all seams and nail heads.
Professional installation is strongly recommended for all but the simplest applications. Improper installation is the leading cause of premature rolled roof failure, especially in the Chicago climate, where freeze-thaw cycles put significant stress on roofing materials.

After hail damage hit our roof, we called Aegis Construction, it turned out to be one of the smoother home repair experiences we've had, and that's saying something when insurance is involved. Our rep, Zach Greenberger, walked us through every step of the claims process and was always available when we had questions. They had a huge selection of high quality materials to choose from, showed up exactly when they said they would, and the crew did beautiful, clean work from start to finish. They even managed to sneak in a few upgrades to the house while still keeping everything within what our insurance covered. Aegis actually has a real facilities and offices, right here in Elmhurst and Villa Park, so you know they're not disappearing after a storm rolls through. Highly recommend them for any roofing or gutter work, hail damage or any other exterior projects you might have.Posted on Google![]()

From the very first phone call, my experience with Aegis Construction Group, Inc. has been exceptional. A few months ago, Mike came out to inspect my roof, and I was incredibly impressed with how thorough, honest, and professional he was. He took the time to carefully inspect everything and reassured me that my roof was in great shape. I truly appreciated that he wasn’t trying to sell me something I didn’t need. Unfortunately, our area has been hit hard with several severe storms since then, including another one after Mike’s inspection. I called Jake, the manager, to share my concerns, and without hesitation, he immediately arranged for someone to come back out and inspect my roof again just to make sure no new damage had occurred. That level of customer service is hard to find. The entire team genuinely cares about homeowners and goes above and beyond to provide honest advice, peace of mind, and outstanding service. It’s easy to see why Aegis Construction Group has so many glowing reviews, they’ve certainly earned them. If you’re looking for a trustworthy, knowledgeable, and responsive roofing company, I can’t recommend Aegis Construction Group, Inc. enough. Thank you to Mike, Jake, and the entire team for your professionalism, integrity, and exceptional customer care!Posted on Google![]()

After many attempts on finding a roofing company, Aegis was the only one to respond to my calls. Not only did they respond, but they did responded right away! I forgot who I talked to first but he was very responsive to me even during a difficult time he was going through. From there he sent over one of his guys to help me. I was helped by Bryan. He always kept in touch with me on what the plan was. He was on top of it. He also explained how some insurance companies worked and guided me throughout the whole process. While we were waiting for the shingles to arrive, they tarped the area of the roof that was damaged. I forgot who worked on my roof but he was done within an hour or so. Granted, it was a few shingles that had to be replaced. They also noticed my front siding was missing a piece and offered to fix it up as well. Amazing work and customer service from all the guys here.Posted on Google![]()

I’ve been involved with public project management for 40 years, and my experience with Aegis Construction Group (for my personal home roof and gutter replacement caused by hail damage) by far is one of the best contractor’s, especially Nico Buccieri, that I’ve worked with that included but not limited to: initial roof inspection, acceptance of Owner requested contractual terms & conditions, worker safety (OSHA compliance), contract administration/documentation (addendums, owner initiated change orders, waiver of liens, invoices, etc), insurance administration/cost negotiations, ethical, subcontractor management, material options, overall client communication, quality of workmanship and fair pricing. Based on my specific experience I would consider rehiring Aegis for any future work.Posted on Google![]()

After a bad August storm we had our roof replaced. Howard from Aegis walked us through the insurance claims process and was in constant contact. Great guy to work with and enjoyable to talk to. Moshi was great as well. They both made the whole process seamless. Very glad I went with Aegis and I highly recommend them!Posted on Google![]()

Aegis replaced my roof, soffits, gutters and downspouts. The quality of work, quality of products used, their amazing construction crews, the clean up, the finished product and communication during the construction was so much better than l anticipated. If possible l would give them more than 5 stars.Posted on Google![]()

If you need your roof done, go with Carmen Curio (with Aegis Construction Group ) . He has my highest recommendation. He has been diligently working through my situation with me since October(!), helping me through each phase of the process. I don't want to go into too much detail here, but it all began when he alerted me to some red flags that were so disheartening at the time, but really ended up saving me a LOT of money and hassles in the long run. Every time I text him, he replies promptly and never gives the impression that I'm annoying him...even though my friends all know how annoying I actually am. The roof is done, but the insurance process is not...and he is still going the extra mile to help me through it (even though Aegis Construction has been paid and Carmen has nothing really left to gain financially). I feel like most people/companies in the same position just move on to the next paycheck, providing the "extra mile" only to secure the job. This, in and of itself, speaks volumes about him and Aegis. They are the real deal. Thank you, Carmen. I know I'm not your friend, but you're a friend.Posted on Google![]()

I feel your new website is most impressive, covering all questions a perspective buyer would be thinking. When mentioning siding, towns are mentioned...then it is stated plus...."surrounding towns ". What would those towns be? Might become a make or break it for customer.Posted on Google![]()

100% recommend Aegis!! We had hail damage to our roof right before an out-of-state move, and gave Aegis a call to help us out. Kenny and Rae handled all the back and forth with insurance, worked hard to get us a fair adjustment, and provided us photos and updates along the way. The work was done very promptly, and they made a very stressful situation as smooth as could be.
